I have been reading Potzsch's books for the past couple years and they are very interesting to me. I have an interest in German history and culture and I always learn something from his novels. This one had a lot of twists and was enjoyable to read. Having such a young hero was at times implausible, but if one uses her imagination--who cares? Of course, there was an indication that there would be a sequel to this book.I would start with his book, "The Hangman's Daughter," a very good read.

This the first book by Oliver Pötzsch I've read. It was not billed as a YA novel, but it definitely is one. That may or may not be an artifact of the translation. Regardless, it was a decent YA novel. If that was the author's intent, then he succeeded. The background history of the Thirty Years War was sound, though only referred to in passing. The vocabulary used to describe swords and fencing techniques indicate a greater familiarity with European swordsmanship than is common among authors. The characters are more stock than flat, more routine than deeply developed. I'm sure most literate teen boys would enjoy it.

This book is a departure from the author's Hangman's Daughter series. While filled with believable characters and set in well researched historical backdrops including the conflict with Swedes and mercenaries, this book veers into magic and sorcerers as well. All in all this introduces a sense of wonder that is more fun than straight history. The protagonists are young, and a few the plot twists are at times either somewhat predictable or slightly implausible, but young adults and mature fantasy readers should all enjoy this book. Looking forward to the next one in this series!

Not the Hangman's Daughter, but not bad. As always we get a nice history lesson which is always a pleasure for me, as I know little about medieval German history. I read it very quickly, as I wanted to always see what was going to happen next. Only issue I have had with this and the last couple of Oliver's books that have been translated to English is the very strange use of modern American English which is completely out of sync with the setting of the time period in Germany. Almost slang phrases appear in the middle of a tense confrontation with an Inquisitor, sort of jolts you and you lose the thread while you try to recoup the time period and mood and terror when something like "hey you guys" gets inserted. But still I love Oliver Potzsch and await his next book eagerly.

It was a good book. I enjoyed reading it but the ending is what makes me give it 3 stars instead of 4. I feel the ending really wasn't a conclusion, like there was too much set up for a sequel. The last line really should have read "Too be continued......"

I'll give Book of the Night five stars just because I like reading historical fiction, and the plot kept me engaged. Swashbuckling war and magic make good partners. The obligatory villain is truly a bad guy, too! I've read several of PÃ¶tzch's books, and they are good at transporting me to a different place and time and cultures that are foreign to me. I'll look forward to his next book.

Having been a fan of Oliver PÃ¶tzsch since the Hangman's Daughter series, the Book of the Night was filled with swashbuckling action, die-hard friendship and a dose of sinister evil countered by a white witch. All in all a fun read. The only reason for the one star markdown was PÃ¶tzsch's choice of narrator. Thoroughly American, he was incapable of even a trace of any convincing German accent, including the total butchery of German names and places. He even spoke the German letter ÃŸ as a "b" when it is actually a double "s" sound. Made me feel at times that the story took place in the Midwest. So read it; don't bother with Audible.

I'm enamored by the flowing adventures of the main character in the story, by the name of Lucus. The storyline is spellbinding, the historical narration of the war, the travels through the country's city's, this is a great read. It has tremendous importance in the history of mankind centuries ago. Are we still similar to those from centuries ago, still fighting the same types of wars? Id say so as a Nam vet.

It is thorough and detailed withillustrations and photos and instructions on how to fix anything on Your volkswagen beetle.This is called the Blue VW Bible, because it IS used by Beetle owners all over the world, to check or repair their beetle. I use my copy all the time.. Highly Recommended. I see these used on ebay or the Samba occassionaly, but they're always priced at almost what a NEW one costs here at Amazon, so I finally decided to pull the trigger on it.I didn't notice when I placed my order, and was pleasantly surprised when it arrived, to discover that it's now in HARDCOVER!! Thanx, Bently/Amazon!!However, I was a little dissappointed in the wiring diagrams (one of the main reasons I decided to buy -- I already have the 70-79 edition). There's only ONE diagram for the four years of Ghia covered by the manual, and it's available for free download elsewhere on the web. The diagram provided appears to be for the '67 model year. I know for a fact that the '66 is different as is my '69 -- My flasher relay is different and there's no mention whatsoever of the dual brake warning light circuit in this book.But, if you've got any kind of common sense at all, you should be able to get by. Still, I expected more completeness from something called a "service manual". Is it just me?Further, as a Ghia collector, I wish ALL of these Bentley manuals would show/discuss more systems specific to the Type 14.

If you own a air-cooled VW, this manual is the one to own! I wasted my money on Haynes, Chilton and the How to keep your VW running and they are a major waste of money!!! This is easy to understand and to apply.

This thing helped me change out the rear drum brakes on my Beck Porsche Speedster which has old VW rear brakes. I couldn't find anywhere else exactly how many foot pounds of torque that pesky axle nut required. Highly recommended for this kinda esoteric work!

I had an original book for my 1rst VW. It taught me everything, including the little tricks, methods,and applications necessary to be trained as a VW mechanic. It took me many years to find this book, my old one looked quite different and stayed with my old car where ever it is. I have another VW and I am glad I finally found this book. There is no nonsence, drama, or other stuff as in other books. Get this one everything works!

This is the manual Volkswagen uses and is superior to those from other publishers since it focuses on a narrow range of model years.

This is a wonderfully moving story that is at times funny, reflective, and heartbreaking, yet it always feels gut-wrenchingly honest. While the story is the very personal journey of George Shannon, the themes of redemption, dedication, and trying to make up for lost time are universal and I found myself feeling like I was along for the ride with him throughout the journey. While this book is extremely relevant for caregivers, I would recommend it to anyone that is trying to build a successful and lasting relationship.

Sad but true

When his wife of 41 years had a debilitating stroke, George Shannon's life took a turn into a period of both intensive caregiving and deep reflection on his own life and values. With The Best Seven Years of My Life (2018, George B. But men who are caregivers, especially husbands, need to read this book. It is well told, honestly told, deeply told. It is a book which this reviewer identified with on many levels, especially when it came to what the hardship but very much the privilege of caregiving will bestow on caregivers: a lesson in humility as well as faith, hope, and love.I liked this book. It is honest and straight forward. It is meaningful and inspirational.Those who work with caregivers, those who are caregivers, and those who deal with caregivers in the workplace, family, and even the faith community, will benefit from reading this book.I rated this book five stars on GoodreadsNote: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a review. I thought this would be a great book to give my mother who is a caregiver for my father with parkinsons but was disappointed. Also impatient that george took an inordinate amount of responsibility both for the years of his marriage and after carol got sick. It is hard to truly know someone who never offers an opinion. It is also a burden to be the one who always has to make all the decisions with no input. Don't be so hard on yourself George! in sickness and in health is a vow we take and I agree that we have to accept situations that present themselves.But there is no sin in carving out moments for oneself amidst caregiving duties.We often wonder if we are "up to the task" when catastrophe strikes and often surprised to find that we can "step up"Kudos to George for finding the joy in that.The book is a bit repetitive and there are nuggets of wisdom we can all take away.But I wish he showed how he also made time for himself so I could pass it on to my parents.

A beautiful story cover to cover. As a spouse, daughter, and healthcare provider, this book offers so much insight.In this honest story, George shows us how even in our darkest moments, light, growth and joy can permeate. George's willingness to expose his shortcomings and vulnerabilities is admirable and relatable. It is easy to feel the weight he carried around and how he slowly, through redefining what his marriage meant to him and Carol, is able to shed that heaviness. The story definitely left me feeling reflective of my own marriage and wanting to a have they type of commitment these two shared.Though not an explicit goal of this read, it offers a unique perspective for healthcare professionals; the loved ones point of view. Similar to how Atul Gawande's "Being Mortal" offered a glimpse of our care from the patient's perspective, this story helps shed light on how we say and do things affects the family of our patients.Overall, this book offered laughs, tears and a lot to ponder. I didn't want it to end but also couldn't put it down so it was over in a flash.
